ZAMBOANGA CITY - The National Irrigation Administration conducted a vermi composting training for members of the Macaja Irrigators Association (Macaja IA) on July 24, 2025, in Maasin, Zamboanga City. The session was facilitated by an Irrigators Development Officer from the agency, who provided practical insights into the science and application of vermi composting as a sustainable farming solution. The training aimed to equip IA members with the knowledge and skills to produce organic fertilizer through vermiculture, not only to improve soil health and crop productivity but also to introduce vermi composting as a viable livelihood opportunity. Participants were introduced to the basics of vermiculture, including the role of composting worms in organic waste management and the agricultural benefits of using vermicast or "vermi tea."
An actual demonstration followed, where IA members actively participated in the construction of a vermi bed using locally available biodegradable materials. The session covered proper layering techniques, moisture control, compost maintenance, harvesting, and packaging. The training concluded with a discussion on how Macaja IA can integrate vermi composting into their farming practices and explore its potential as an income-generating activity for the association.
