NIA Central Office inspects Mahayag Dam damages

Technical team from NIA Central Office personally inspects and assess the severity of damage of Mayahag Dam located at Lower Salug Daku, Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur as part of the actions taken by the Agency for the planning of its repair and rehabilitation.

The Mahayag Dam is the main diversion structure of Salug River Irrigation System (SARIS) which was constructed in the early 1970’s with service area of 4438.19 hectares. Its covered area are the municipalities of Mahayag, Sominot, Ramon Magsaysay and Molave, all under the province of Zamboanga del Sur. It consists of two main canals, the east and the west main canal.

Due to severe flooding last December 26, 2022, the ogee dam and its apron flooring were damaged. It also caused minor displacement of concrete blocks and riverbank erosion. Hence, Regional Manager Salome N. Layasan requested the technical assistance from NIA Design and Specifications Division (NIA-DSD) for sound solution to the problem.

On February 22-23, 2023, the team of Zamboanga del Sur Irrigation Management Office (ZDS IMO) headed by Engr. Benedicto Isagani O. Pulis Jr. accompanied the team from NIA-DSD composed of Engr. Michael D. Pantig, Engr. Mark Jhun P. Ilehay, and Engr. Gerald L. Tiangsing during the inspection and assessment.  The team also inspected the Tambulig Teruvian Intake which was damaged on April 27, 2022.
The team from NIA-DSD subsequently gave their findings and recommendations for the damaged irrigation facilities during an exit conference held on February 24, 2023 at ZDS IMO. The conference was also attended virtually by Regional Manager Layasan, and Engr. Roald Mark J. Revillame, Chief of Civil Works Design Section of NIA-DSD.
